The Black Household Ant (Ochetellus) is a fascinating Australian native genus known for its glossy black appearance, energetic foraging behaviour and impressive ability to adapt to different environments. These small, active ants form busy trails as they explore their surroundings in search of food. They naturally feed on insects, nectar and honeydew, and are particularly attracted to sweet foods. In the wild, they inhabit open woodlands, gardens and urban environments, nesting beneath rocks, inside fallen logs, hollow trees and plant stems. Active both day and night, they are an interesting species for ant keepers who enjoy observing constant movement, food gathering and colony activity.
